October 1st 2009 7:00pm Full Instructor/Black Sash Test
On Thursday October 1st, Westchester Martial Arts Academy will have three candidates who will be testing for Full Instructor; Mr. George Chaber, Mr. Dylan Cathers and Mr. Carlos Castro. Each of these students have been actively training at WMAA for almost 7 years, have full time careers, are family men and are great examples to others in WMAA and Warrior's Way International as to what you can achieve if you set goals and drive toward them with passion.

WMAA is the east coast chapter of Warrior's Way International; the premier Jeet Kune Do Concepts and Filipino Martial Arts organization dedicated to promoting the teachings and philosophies of:
Magulang Na Guro/Sifu Dan Inosanto- LaCoste/Inosanto Kali, Maphilindo Silat and Majapahit Martial Arts, Jeet Kune Do Pamana Tuhon Chris Sayoc- Sayoc Kali, Sayoc Fighting Systems Grandmaster Tony Somera- Giron Arnis Eskrima, Bahala Na Martial Arts Ajarn "Chai" Sirisute- Muay Thai/ Thaiboxing Guru Besar Herman Suwanda- Pencak Silat Mande Muda Sifu Terry Gibson- JKD, Kali, Silat, Muay Thai.

Under the guidance of founder and head instructor Harley Elmore, Warrior's Way is a network of instructors which carry on the teachings of the aforementioned instructors. Warrior's Way serves as a way to share, network, pass on training and promote students in these arts.

The curriculum at WMAA leads the student from beginner to advanced level. At each phase along the way, students are tested to determine if they have grasped the material and have the skill necessary to move on the next level in the program.

The promotion from one student level to another is done in each school and with the blessing and backing of the parent organization, Warrior's Way International. However, testing for Full Instructor is only done by a panel of Instructors who have already passed this exam. This gives each Instructor as say as to what level people should be to represent Warrior's Way Int'l.

These Instructors on the panel are the "Gate Keepers". It's their job to weed out those who don't have the skill or knowledge to be accepted into the core group of leaders in the organization. They are understandably serious about their duties and feel an obligation not just to Warrior's Way but to all the Masters and Grand Masters that Warrior's Way represents.

The Test itself consists of a basic physical fitness test, a performance test, a verbal knowledge test and a sparring test. The physical fitness test is a 3 mile run, max push-ups and max pull ups. There is not a time limit on the run, but most strive for a personal best. The performance test is where the candidates perform material from beginner to advanced level from each of the arts. Students will be asked to demonstrate any level of material from any Instructor in random order. The curriculum consists of the following martial arts systems in which we rank Instructors:
Jun Fan Gung Fu / Jeet Kune Do Concepts, LaCoste / Inosanto Kali, Maphilindo Silat and Madjapahit Martial Arts and Muay Thai.

These arts form the foundation from which our whole organization is based. Sayoc Kali and Bahala Na / Giron Arnis Escrima are systems that are taught alongside the Warrior's Way curriculum but are not integrated.

The Instructors will ask the candidates questions ranging from history of the countries these systems came from, prominent people in the art, teaching philosophies and or training methods. It's during this time that more personal questions about personal goals, difficulties and triumphs are covered.

Lastly is sparring. This is the Instructor's last chance to prove someone unworthy or accept them as one of their own. It's the most challenging for all involved, mentally and emotionally. But it's a necessary step to earning the right to be called a Full Instructor.

We are looking forward to the test; it'll be WMAA's first one and the first one with three candidates testing at one time!
